Poland 1 - nil over Austria in the second half

Why am I blogging about a Euro 2008 match on a day when the gNats played? Because they are an awful, awful baseball team undergoing a horrendous run of bad luck. Anyone know if they have half-smokes where the Potomac Nats play?

So the Dukes vs. Manny dust up has gotten some good coverage over on the WaPo blog. Anyone have any thoughts on whether they think Dukes will make it to September? Once AK-47 comes back and hits a rollicking .249 sending Dukes to the bench, does ED accept the diminished role?

Maybe because the architectural inspiration for STBNGNP was several recently built monster soccer stadiums? Build a shrunk down soccer stadium for baseball and you get baseball as dull as soccer. Here's a great idea! Let's really fix up RFK right, move the Nats back, and move DC United to STBNGNP. Then the United will finally have that rinky dink new stadium they want. Think about it. If soccer is really the sport of the future in the US (like has been claimed for 30+ years and 2 failed soccer leagues now), wouldn't the team want to have a stadium that will seat those massive throngs of future fans if and when they ever show up? Now that they basically have it all to themselves, DC United should show some real belief in the future and try to get RFK reconfigured into a nice soccer facility.

Great idea. But United wants it's own stadium across the river from STBNGNP and they'll probably get it. I'm sure a smaller soccer only stadium would have saved the Dips.

Once they're gone, the Danny can raze RFK and build his retractable roof stadium which will hold 1000 more people than Jerry Jones' and get the 2014 Super Bowl.

As much as I would rather see the Nats at RFK, I know that will never happen and my ultimate hope also is that a new Redskins stadium will be built at the RFK site. But inexplicably, we're supposed to be blogging soccer here. The Dips failed because the whole NASL failed. At the end, they were one of the few remaining viable franchises; but you need more than 3 or 4 teams to sustain a league. There is merit to the argument for "right-sized" stadiums for the current MSL revenue base. The NASL failed because the team owners tried to expand too quickly and started bringing in high priced international talent. The success of the NY Cosmos with Pele mislead team ownwers into believing America was ready for big time soccer. Many of the teams were playing in small stadiums at the beginning, then moved into larger venues. While the NASL prematurely expanded, they had the option of moving into the large multi-purpose stadiums that were the rage of the 60s and 70s. (BTW, RFK and Candlestick park are the only 2 left standing). My point is, we are now in an era of purpose built stadiums. If soccer populartiy explodes, MSL teams may not have ready access to larger facilities again, thereby impede their future grotwh. But on the subject of right-sized stadiums, did you ever go to a Dips game when they played at Woodson High School in the mid '70s?

Nope, never saw them anywhere other than RFK.
